Assignment 5: Proposal Final Rework

Proposal Final Rework

The basis of my proposal has been consistent for many months and has helped me focus on my work and give my views a consistency which I sometimes have lacked in my previous work. Therefore I did not think it was necessary to rework this area.

However I have looked with a critical view about my outputs and what I have, haven't achieved and what I hope to do in the future.  I have achieved work which is different from what I envisaged at the beginning however this is due to sampling and sketchbook work which as taken me in different directions.

What I have found really interesting and exciting is that whilst I have a strong theme and focus on the coverlet as my outcome I have found away of looking at different ideas of conveying messages, pushing myself technically and artistically.

I have found myself well out of my comfort zone and whilst this has been a challenge it is one that I have been really interested in. I was worried that I wouldn't have been able to achieve what I have done at the beginning of the course.  But by having the proposal in the back of my mind (but not controlling it) this helped my creativity and excitement in reaching my goals.

Whilst I haven't gone on to develop some of the mini project work I had in my proposal in Assignment 4, I have introduced some subtle projects in to my work. Looking at line work and how to transfer flowing lines in to my pieces was something that came through first in my drawings and I really wanted to transfer them in to textile work in different ways.

The introduction of litho printing on different fabrics and painting with both acrylics and watercolours was something that came in my experimentation between assignment 4 and 5 when I looked at how to create different images for the quilts and use more mixed media.

The different scales and images are clearly part of my project and aims however they all have their own merits and as an individual day in the menopause is different from one another they should all be slightly different to represent that diversity.

I acknowledge that I would like to get more proficient at sewing and embroidery. I have taken this as an important part of me honing and learning my craft more and through the pieces I have gradually become more technically adept however there is room for more improvement.

Going forward with my work I have dyed more domestic textiles, like a hand towel, pillowcase, dress and all these are part of how I can progress with my theme either with embroidery, applique or paint to see how I can take my work in to new areas. I still want to work with the theme of the menopause as I believe there is so much more I can create and develop.

Did I achieve what I set out to do in my Proposal ?

The main aim of the proposal was to instill discussion on the menopause.

I am really pleased that my sketchbooks have become stronger with visual and written material that I can use to experiment and challenge myself in. Through them I have managed to develop a voice in my work.

It was important for me to have a reason for creating my work and the personal narrative became very important the more I created samples and drawings.

I have challenging myself and am very much appreciative of my tutor's advice and encouragement to help me get through some of the concerns I had. For instance I would have liked to do a larger body of textiles work but hand sew a lot of the coverlet and the samples has taken longer than envisaged, plus I also dyed and painted patterns on the fabrics.

My chosen fabrics were also telling stories through recycled materials, being torn and frayed at the edges the way I was feeling through lack of sleep. The large b

in the centre of the piece is still experiencing symptoms but is looking forward to leaving them behind and coming through the experience as a stronger person.

Looking at the coverlet now it is a labour of love I, myself feel intrinsically sewn in it. My sketchbooks are full of ideas that I can take forward to produce more work based to keep the discussion of the menopause alive and on the radar.

Covid-19 has hampered me being able to show the physical piece to many people but this has opened up ideas that I had for social media and surveys. The feedback from the Menopause Cafe was really exciting and has given me a lot more confidence to keep on with my work.

I have achieved more discussion on the menopause through my artwork it may be in a small arena at the moment but as mentioned I have further ideas for the future.
